The Mess Facilities

Isle of Portland, Dorset.

This unbuilt facility on Portland, Dorset is huge! I was unable to find any history on it and no one in the area seemed to know what it was.

It looked as if it had been here since the war judging by the clear signs of weathering and how overgrown the grounds around it were. How and why it is still standing is unknown to us. It would have seemed that construction came to a sudden hault as there are still tonnes of building supplies lying around the site and under the building.

This site on Portland in particular is heavily guarded by private and public authorities. So, during out visit we had to talk to the local authorities and the private security that was working on site.

Once we got in it was a short walk down a steep hill that took us to the entrance to the site. When we were at the bottom looking up to the top of the building we realised just how high this structure was. Our immediate thoughts were to get to the top.

Once we entered the buildings stairwell we could see straight away that this building was unsafe, or at least it looked that way. There were large holes missing from the walls holing it up and there were boulders of broken stone on the floor. Being in a place like this really makes you think about your surroundings.

When we got to the roof the only real interesting thing was the view. You could see the whole of Portland but that was about it. Looking at how the floors were planned out we came up with the idea that the building could've been naval accomodation for training or for members of the navy to stay in. If I come across any information about the site I will update this page as soon as possible.
